I always thought garam masala used only cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, jeera and coriander ( though I'm not sure if I got the last two right). In fact when i was a boy I have heard it explained to foreigners as 5- spice powders when they ask about garam masala. Ma'am from your vast knowledge do you have any idea if this is the same garam masala powder recipe used in our homes (Karnataka/ Andhra) about 35-40 years ago? Because all the modern garam masala recipes seem more like biryani masalas to me. Or am I completely mistaken about my childhood memories?
