*********** More About Bengali Gota Sheddho Tradition ******
GOTA SHEDHO = literally translates to “whole boiled”.
Saraswati Puja is celebrated among Hindu Bengalis on Vasant Panchami (called “Bashonto Ponchomi”). It is the fifth day and marks the arrival of spring. This day, Goddess Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge, Music, Art and Culture is worshiped.
Two very popular food rituals are associated with Vasant Panchami, Jora Ilish and Gota Sheddho. While the Jora Ilish (two Hilsa fishes cooked together in a light watery gravy with vegetables) ritual is followed in a Bangal (people originally from East Bengal, now Bangladesh) household, Gota Sheddho is a Ghoti (people originally from the state of West Bengal) ritual. This Gota shedho is cooked on the day of Saraswati Puja, to be eaten the next day.
The day after Saraswati Puja, the sixth day, is observed as “Sheetal Shashti” among Ghotis. Sheetal Shasthi (Sheetal = cold; Shashti = 6th day) is generally marked as a day of arandhan – meaning a day when the hearth is not lit and no cooking takes place in the house. Gota sheddho is eaten cold, sometimes with pantha bhaath (fermented stale rice) on this day. This ritual is mainly observed by the Bengali mothers wishing for long healthy life of their children.
Gota Sheddho is a pure vegetarian dish, made without the use of onions and garlic. Traditionally 3, 5 or 7 types of whole vegetables are added along with whole lentils. Each vegetable needs to be taken in 6 numbers and as the name Gota suggest, the vegetables cannot be cut or peeled, they have to be used whole.
