Bata Macher Jhal – Most Famous Bengali Traditional Fish Curry

Preparation Time for Bata Macher Jhal: 20 minutes

Cooking Time for Bata Fish Curry: 30 minutes

Ingredients of Bata Macher Jhal:
1. Bata mach / Bata Fish (300 gm).
2. Chopped onion (1 big size).
3. Sliced tomato (1 medium size).
4. Turmeric powder (1 tsp).
5. Coriander powder (1tsp).
6. Red chilli powder (½ tsp).
7. Chopped coriander leaves (2 tbsp).
8. 1 dry chilli.
9. 1 bay leaf.
10. Salt (as per your taste).
11. Salt (as per your taste).
12. Mustard oil
13. Black cumin seeds ( ¼ tsp).
14. Slitted green chilli (4 no’s).

Methods of how to cook Bata Macher Jhal:
1. Marinate the fish with ½ tsp salt and ½ tsp of turmeric powder. Keep for 5 min.
2. Fry the fish both side very well.
3. Add 3 tbsp mustard oil in hot pan.
4. Add ¼ tsp black cumin seed, 1 bay leaf, 1 dry chilli. Fry for 15 – 20 sec.
5. Add chopped onion. Fry till golden brown.
6. Add sliced tomato. Cook in medium flame for 1 min.
7. Add slitted green chilli. Stir it.
8. Add 1 tsp cumin powder, ½ tsp red chilli powder, and ½ tsp turmeric powder. Mixed it well.
9. Add 2 tbsp water. Cook for 2 or 3 min in medium flame.
10. Add ½ tsp salt, ¼ tsp sugar. Mixed it well. Cook for 2 or 3 min again in medium flame.
11. Add 2 cups water. When boiled add the fried fishes.
12. Close the lid for 10 min. keep the gas oven in medium flame.
13. Now taste the sugar and salt. Add more as per your taste.
14. Add chopped coriander leaves 1 to 2 tbsp.
15. Put off gas oven. Close the lid for 5 min.
16. The Bata Fish Curry recipe is ready. Serve hot with hot steamed rice.
