Kanava/Koonthal/Squid Thoran is a traditional Kerala coastal recipe from Salu Kitchen made with shredded coconut. The recipe is mildly spicy but very delicious and is made with some ingredients and requires less cooking time.

1. 10-20 squid, cleaned and washed well; remove the ink well
2. slice the squid to required size and shape
3. wash well again, and transfer to cooking pot
4. pour water to level
5. add salt as required
6. crush 7-8 garlic cloves and a piece of ginger; add this to the pot
7. ½ tsp turmeric powder
8. add curry leaves
9. mix well, close with lid and cook until the water evaporates
to prepare gravy:
10. ¾ cup shredded coconut
11. curry leaves
12. 3 green chilli
13. 6-7 garlic cloves
14. ½ tsp turmeric powder
15. 1 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder
16. ¼ tsp black pepper powder
17. ½ tsp cumin seeds
18. blend the ingredients without the chilli and green leaves first and then blend again with them
19. do not add water
20. open the lid and add the gravy mix over it
21. do not mix; close the lid and continue cooking for 2-3 minutes
22. mix well; pour 1 tsp of coconut oil over the pot
23. turn off the flame and serve hot
