Cheera-Parippu thoran(Paalak-Dal thoran)

Description :

Ingredients:
Palak / Spinach – 1 bunch
Chana dal – 4 handfuls
Grated coconut – ½ of a coconut / 4 handfuls
Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
Green chilly – As per taste
Onion – 1 medium / Shallots (Finely chopped)
Curry leaves
Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
Turmeric powder – ½ tsp
Salt
Oil

Steps:
Pressure cook dal adding water just to the level of dal for one whistle on high flame.
Don’t overcook. If there is more water, cook open till it dries.

Pulse cumin seeds, green chillies and coconut in a mixer.

Heat coconut oil in a pan.
Add mustard seeds and let it splutter.
Add onion and curry leaves.
When the onion becomes soft, lower the flame and add turmeric powder. Sauté till the raw smell goes away.
Add coconut mix and cook for 2 minutes on medium flame.
Add palak, cooked dal and salt. Mix well.
Cook for 5 minutes on high flame. No need to cook covered.
Turn off fire.
Don’t cover the pan hot as it changes the colour and taste of palak.
Enjoy the thoran with rice or chappathi.
