1 cup = 250ml
Broken wheat – 1 ½ cup
Onion – 1 small
Carrot – a little, finely chopped
Mustard seeds – ¾ tbsp
Kalonji seeds – a little
Turmeric powder – 2 pinches
Grated coconut – ½ of 1 coconut
Tomato – ½ of 1
Curry leaves
Salt – to taste
Coconut oil
Hi everyone, today I am going to make an easy, tasty and healthy broken wheat Upma.
To make the Upma, I have soaked one and half cup of broken wheat in water for around half an hour
Next, add the broken wheat along with the water used to soak it in a pressure cooker and cook it for two whistles or one, depending on the size of your broken wheat granules.. Mine are pretty big, so I am going to cook for two whistles. If yours are small, then you can cook only for one whistle. While cooking in the pressure cooker, add just enough water to cover the broken wheat.
Once the broken wheat is cooked and ready, we can start preparing the Upma
To prepare Upma, heat a pan and add some coconut oil to it.
Once the oil heats up, add ¾ tablespoon of mustard seeds and let it splutter
Once the mustard seeds start to splutter, add Kalonji seeds and immediately add finely chopped onion, finely chopped carrot, green chilies, few curry leaves and a small piece of crushed ginger and sauté well
Once the carrot starts to sauté, add two pinches of turmeric powder and sauté until its raw smell goes away.
Next, add half a tomato, finely chopped into the pan along with some salt to taste.. Keep sautéing the tomatoes with the lid open..
Once everything in the pan is sautéed well, add in the cooked broken wheat and mix well.. Along with it, add half of a grated coconut and mix well. If you do not like to have the coconut, you can skip it.
Give everything a good mix and your healthy broken wheat Upma is ready..
You can also add a few nuts if you like, while preparing this upma..
