Arisi Upma With Brinjal Thuvayal
INGREDIENTS
Rice Rawa – 1 Cup
Water – 2 1/2 to 3 Cups
Green Chillies – 2
Red Chilli – 1
Curry Leaves
Grated Fresh Coconut – 2 Tblsps
Cooked Peas/Frozen Peas – 1/4 Cup
Salt – As Required
Oil – 2 1/2 Tblsps
Mustard Seeds – 1/2 Tsp
Urad Dhal – 1 Tsp
Bengal Gram Dhal – 1 Tsp
Cumin Seeds – 1/2 Tsp
Asafoetida Powder – 2 Pinches

METHOD
1. Heat oil in a kadai.
2. Add mustard seeds, urad, bengal gram, cumin seeds, broken red chilli, slit green chilli, curry leaves and then asafoetida powder.
3. Pour measured water, green peas, salt and coconut grating to that.
4. When it starts boiling sprinkle rawa in a steady manner, stirring constantly without lumps.
5. Close with a lid and cook until soft and moisture gets absorbed into that. Serve hot with any pickle.

ACCOMPANIMENT: Brinjal Thuvayal
INGREDIENTS
Brinjal – 1 or 2
Onion (Dried) – 1
Green Chillies – 2
Grated Fresh Coconut – 1 Tbls
Salt
Tamarind Pulp – 1/4 Tsp
Jaggery – Little

METHOD
1. Slit Brinjals in 4 places and keep in a kadai with little oil.
2. Close with lid and cook until it turns dark on all sides.
3. Remove the skin after few minutes, mash coarsely with finger tips.
4. Heat little oil. Fry onion, cut green chillies until onion turns translucent.
5. In a small mixie jar, add fried green chilli, coconut, salt, jaggery, tamarind and run once.
6. Mix with mashed brinjal and fried onion. Serve with Upma.

  • In the ingredients listed you have lusted cumin and asafetida but you never added during the preparation of Arisi upma. For katharika togayal you add tamarind in one step and in the next step you mention since tamarind is not added salt may be added less. can you clarify?
