Khara Pongal and Sweet Pongal are the two main variants of the South Indian Pongal Recipe. Ven pongal / Kara Pongal is a very savory traditional south Indian Breakfast recipe. Ven Pongal Recipe is enjoyed with chutney and sambar, along with methu vadai.

Ingredients:
1 cup raw rice
1/2 cup moong dal
1 tbsp chopped Ginger
2 tsp Cumin seeds(jeera)
3 Green chillies
1 tsp pepper cons
1/4 tsp hing
3 tbsp ghee
6 cups water
salt to taste

To Temper:
1 tbsp ghee
10-12 cashews
10 curry leaves

  • soaking dhal and rice in water for few minutes is not compulsory isn't it?
    while tempering we usually add some cuminseeds along with pepper
    six whistle in medium flame isn't it?because sometimes it goes like a paste in pressurecooker
