Kerala Style Mathi / sardine Varuthu Pollichathu

Ingredients:
Mathi (sardine): 250 gm, cleaned (I like to give slit marks on each side).
For Marination:
Onion: 1/4 or shallots: 4 or 5.
Garlic Cloves: 4 to 5.
Kashmiri Chilly Powder: 1 tsp.
Salt: 1/2 tsp or as needed.
To make the curry:
Onion: One large or two medium, sliced.
Tomatoes: 2, finely chopped.
Green Chilly: 2, slit.
Kashmiri Chilly Powder: 1 tsp
Pepper Powder: 1/2 tsp.
Cardamon: 2.
Cinnamon: 1/4 inch.
Cloves: 4.
Vinegar: 1 tsp.
Curry leaves: 1 or 2 sprigs.
Thick coconut milk: 1 cup ( I used coconut milk powder-2 1/2 tbsp in 1 cup water.
Coconut Oil: 1 tbsp.
Salt: 1 tsp or as needed.
