Ingredients

To Make Filling
Urad Dal – 1/2 Cup
Toor Dal – 2 Tbsp
Salt – 1/2 Tsp
Green Chili – 2 Nos
Gingelly Oil – 3 Tsp
Mustard Seeds – 1 Tsp
Asafoetida Powder – 1/2 Tsp
Few Curry Leaves

To Make Kozhukattai
Idiyappam/kozhukattai Flour – 1 Cup
Salt – 1/2 Tsp
Gingelly Oil – 3 Tsp
Hot Water
Banana Leaf

Method

To make the filling
Clean and soak the dals for 1 hour
Strain the water completely and add it to a mixer jar, add green chilies, salt
Grind it to a coarse mixture
Make smalls out of it and steam it
Steam cook it for 15 mins
Let it cool down a bit, break it into crumbs
Heat a pan with some oil, add mustard seeds and let it splutter
Add curry leaves, asafoetida
Add the crumbled dal mixture and saute
The filling is ready

To make the kozhakatai layer
Boil water
In a bowl, add the idiyappam flour, salt, oil and add the hot water
Mix everything well
Grease your hands with oil and take a small portion from the dough and make a ball out of it (cover the rest of the dough while you are doing this)
Flatten the dough ball on a greased banana leaf and place the filling inside
Seal the edges carefully and keep it aside
Repeat the same process with the remaining dough
Steam them for 15 mins
Uppu Kozhakatais are ready to be served
