Manathakkali Vathal Kuzhambu
Manathakkali (Makoy in Hindi) in English is ‘Black Nightshade’, ‘Sun Berry’, or ‘Wonder Berry’. Its a small dark fruit, which the plant bears and is really good to taste and has immense medicinal value.
Manathakkali Vatha Kuzhambu is made with sun dried black nightshade berries.
Ingredients
Manathakkali vathal – 2 Tbsp
Garlic – 10 cloves
Shallots – 1 cup
Tomato – 1 no. chopped
Powdered Jaggery – 1 Tsp
Tamarind puree – 1 cup
Turmeric powder – 1/4 Tsp
Chili powder – 2 Tbsp
Curry leaves
Gingelly oil – 3 Tbsp
Mustard seeds – 1/2 Tsp
Fenugreek seeds – 1/4 Tsp
Rock salt – 1 Tsp
Water – 1 cup

Method
1. Firstly, mix chili powder with the tamarind puree and leave it aside
2. Heat some oil in a kadai and add some mustard seeds, fenugreek seeds and garlic and saute them
3. Add some manathakali vathal and fry them
4. Next, add some shallots and curry leaves and saute them
5. Add some turmeric powder, tomatoes and rock salt and saute them
6. Pour in the tamarind and chili mix and add a cup of water
7. Let it boil, once the kuzhambu comes to a boil, add a teaspoon of powdered jaggery and turn off the stove
8. Manathakali vathal kuzhambu is ready to be served hot with some steamed rice and applam by the side
