Ingredients:
Raw banana (vaazhakkai) – 2
grated coconut – 1 cup
chilli powder – 1/2 teaspoon
cumin powder – 1/2 teaspoon
turmeric powder – 1/8 teaspoon
salt – 1/2 teaspoon
mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
urid dal (udacha ulundhu paruppu) – 1 tablespoon
asafoetida (perungayam) – 1/4 teaspoon
curry leaves – few
garlic – 2 cloves
onion – 1 small size
Method:
1.First clean the raw banana and remove the skin and cut into small pieces.
2.Add 3 tablespoons oil in a pan (try to use a heavy bottom pan) and when it is hot, add the mustard seeds and urid dal and fry for 5 seconds.
3.Then add the asafoetida and curry leaves and then add the finely chopped garlic.
4.After the raw smell of the garlic is gone, add the chopped onion and fry for a minute and then add the raw banana pieces.
5.Fry for 2 minutes and then close it with a lid and cook for another 2 minutes.
6.Open the lid and sprinkle 2 tablespoons of water and close again and cook in low flame for 3 minutes.
7.After all the water is dried up, increase to high flame and cook without lid for 2 minutes and add chilli powder, cumin powder, salt and turmeric powder.
8.Add 1 teaspoon of coconut oil (optional) and then add the grated coconut and mix well for a minute and vaazhakkai poriyal is ready.
9.Serve hot with rice and and curry like sambar, paruppu or even rasam.
