Ingredients:

Channa dal (kadalai paruppu) – 1 cup
Coconut milk – 3 cups
Chopped small onions (shallot onions) – 1/2 cup
Tomato – 2 medium size
Green chillies – 2
Ginger – 1 inch piece
Coriander leaves – few
Chilli powder – 1/2teaspoon
Coriander powder – 1.5 teaspoon
Turmeric powder – 1/4 teaspoon
Cumin(jeera) powder – 1/2 teaspoon
Mustard seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
Fennel seeds – 1/2 teaspoon
Cinnamon stick – 2 pieces
Curry leaves – few
To mix with the dal – 1 tablespoon chopped onion, 1 teaspoon chopped green chillies, 1/4 teaspoon finely chopped ginger, chopped curry leaves and coriander leaves.

Method:

1.Soak the dal in 3 cups of water for 2 hours and drain the water well.
2.Grind the dal to a coarse mixture and add the ingredients kept separately for mixing with the dal along with 1/2 teaspoon of salt and mix well together.
3.Form small round koftas(balls) from the prapared dal mixture and deep fry it for a minute keep it aside ready. (you can also steam the koftas instead of frying)
4.Heat 3 tablespoons of oil in a pan, and when it is hot add the fennel seeds and mustard seeds and fry for 5 seconds and then add then add the cinnamon and curry leaves.
5.Once it all splutters well, add the small piece of ginger which is finely chopped and the green chillies, slit into 2 pieces.
6.When the raw smell of the ginger is gone, add the chopped onions and fry for a minute and then add the chopped tomatoes.
7.Cook until the tomatoes become soft for about 2 minutes and then add the chilli powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder and cumin powder and fry for 5 seconds.
8.Then add the 3 cups homemade coconut milk – mixture of first coconut milk and second coconut milk(if using store bought coconut milk, use only 1 cup mixed with 2 cups of water).
9.Add 1.5 teaspoons of salt and allow it to come to a boil.
10.Let it boil in high flame for about 3 minutes and then add the prepared koftas and allow it to simmer in medium flame for 8-10 minutes with a lid on.
11.Paruppu Urundai kuzhambu is ready to serve with rice.
